5 Skills Your Child Needs To Be Ready For Primary 1 English

As children progress towards K2, many parents begin to wonder how prepared their child is for Primary 1, especially for core subjects like English, which is the main language of instruction.

Understanding the essential Primary 1 English skills that children are expected to have can help ease the transition and boost their confidence. However, it’s important to remember that every child develops at their own pace, and some may need more time to master these skills. Here's a breakdown of the key Primary 1 English skills and how you can support your child in developing them.

Primary 1 English Skills Your Child Must Know

#1: Able to write his/her name

One fundamental skill is being able to write and spell their own name legibly. This is a daily task in Primary 1, as children are expected to write their names on worksheets and assignments.

At home, parents can practise tracing letters with pencils, markers or crayons. Make it fun by using letter stickers or magnets to help children piece together their names when learning to spell.

#2: Able to Follow Instructions in English

Class sizes in Primary 1 can be up to 30 students, an increase from the enrolment at kindergartens or childcare centres in Singapore. With this in mind, it’s essential that your child can listen, understand and follow instructions in English. This involved active listening and being able to grasp simple commands like asking for permission or following a teacher’s instruction on homework.

To build this skill at home, parents should use simple English, maintain eye contact and give simple instructions one at a time. You can also get your child to repeat the instructions and, thereafter, observe to see if he can follow through.

#3: Able to Communicate & Express Themselves

Effective communication is a key skill for children entering Primary 1. They will need to express their needs and ideas both verbally and in writing. Moreover, it is important for your child to be able to express their needs and wants effectively.

Encourage your child to talk about their day or discuss their interests. Besides developing a healthy relationship, casual conversations help children become more comfortable with speaking and expressing themselves. You can also practise by encouraging your child to tell stories or share their thoughts on a particular topic.

#4: Reading and Phonics Proficiency

In Primary 1, children are expected to recognise words and be familiar with phonics. By K2, many children in Singapore have been introduced to reading programmes in preschool, which include phonics and word recognition. After all, this is aligned with children’s literacy milestone development stages too, which gets them ready for primary school.

While not all children will be fluent readers by Primary 1, the MOE’s STELLAR curriculum provides additional support for those who need help. Parents can also cultivate a love for reading by reading to their child regularly and making books a fun, integral part of daily life.

#5: Basic Spelling Skills

Spelling is another critical skill that children need to develop before starting Primary 1. The Early Childhood Development Agency (ECDA) considers spelling as a learning objective for K2 children and is integrated into most childcare programmes. Similarly, spelling is part and parcel of the primary school curriculum.

Being able to spell improves a child’s confidence in reading and sets the foundation for writing, thus spelling is important for preschoolers. If your child has never been exposed to spelling, it’s time to get them familiarised with how it works.

At home, parents can make learning fun by playing spelling games, especially during car rides or outings instead of offering screen time.

How Little Footprints Preschool Prepares Your Child for Primary 1 English

Since 2009, the MOE’s STELLAR curriculum has been designed to help children develop a strong foundation in English through creative and interactive activities such as Show and Tell, Journal Writing, and reading tasks. At Little Footprints Preschool, we align our comprehensive bilingual programme with these expectations. Our curriculum ensures that children are exposed to both structured learning and free expression through language, preparing them to succeed in Primary 1.

In the last term of K2, students at Little Footprints undergo our Primary 1 Prep Programme, where they are introduced to the classroom settings and routines they will experience in primary school. This program helps children feel more confident and prepared for the challenges of Primary 1, especially in the English language.
